Design Goals

Mr. Fendley requested that along with his house being renovated (walls repainted, carpets removed, floors updated, new appliances throughout) for his wife and he when they decided to move from North Dallas to Paris, he wanted the stairway refinished with a custom stairway. Because the stairway was origionally designed to be covered in carpet, the carpentry was not the best. Meaning, that they didn’t worry about being very presise with their measurements. Because of this, each and every tread and riser on the stairway was a different width by 1/8ths of an inch in most cases. I special-ordered the 1″ x 12″ #1 grade yellow pine to be brought in to the site and afer afixing each riser to the stairway, I then fashioned 3/4″ x 2″ strips to be glued to each tread to make it appear thicker when it was glued and nailed to each underlayed roughed-in tread. After puttying in the nail holes, the entire surface was wiped down with a conditioning oil to bring out the grain, then stained and then given 3 coats of hi-build polyeurethane for durability. Below shows the process in which everything was done and the final result.
